Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Led by 18 digs from senior defensive specialist Kelly McManus (Osprey, Fla./Pine View) and 15 digs from junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), the Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Birmingham Southern, 3-0, on Friday in its second match of the W&L Invitational.
Despite the lopsided match score, the Generals (5-1) just edged the Panthers (4-2) in the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-23. W&L was able to create some separation in the third, 25-18, to take the match.
Besides the defensive contributions of Cannon and McManus, first-year outside hitter Mary Silliman (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) led the offense with 12 kills and added eight digs. Junior outside hitter Anna Lausberg (Ocoee, Fla./Bishop Moore Catholic) and Cannon each totaled eight kills.
Junior setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) was all over the court with 34 assists, five kills, five digs and one service ace.
Sophomore outside hitter Lynsie Byrd (Ocean Spring, Miss./Ocean Springs) led BSC with 10 kills and added 11 digs. Junior defensive specialist Lauren Bedford (Trussville, Ala./Hewitt-Trussville) had a team-high 13 digs.
The Generals will host Southern Virginia on Saturday at 10:30 am, and finish their play at their own invite against Maryville at 3:30 pm.
