W&L Field Hockey Falls to Bridgewater, 4-1

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Washington and Lee field hockey team gave up three goals in the first half on its way to a 4-1 loss at Bridgewater on Tuesday at the Jopson Athletic Complex.

The Eagles (6-5, 2-0 ODAC) scored the first goal of the contest five minutes after the opening whistle. Senior midfielder Caroline Augsburger recorded the unassisted tally from the top of the circle.

Bridgewater stretched the lead to 2-0 on a goal from junior midfielder Rachael Loy with 13 minutes left in the first half. Junior forward Taylor Prillaman pushed the advantage to 3-0 a minute and a half later to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead entering intermission.

The Generals (5-5, 0-2 ODAC) trimmed the lead to 3-1 just a minute into the second half. Sophomore forward Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) recorded her sixth goal of the season by beating Bridgewater goalkeeper Amanda Harper directly in front of the cage. Prillaman notched her second goal of the game four minutes later to reach the final margin of 4-1.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) started the game for W&L and played 45:34. She allowed four goals, while making four saves. First-year Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) played the final 24:26 for the Blue and White, making one save.

Harper played the full 70 minutes for the Eagles. She stopped six shots, while allowing one goal. Bridgewater led in shots, 16-14, but W&L held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.    

The Generals host Ferrum on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
