Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Mary Washington junior forward Jenna Steele (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) scored four goals to lead the 16th-ranked Eagles to a 5-2 win over Washington and Lee in field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
Steele opened the scoring for UMW (8-2) just 1:28 into the game when she dribbled ahead in transition and beat W&L junior goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School). She then made it a 2-0 game at the 24:14 mark when she scored her second unassisted goal.
The Generals (5-4) cut it to 2-1 when senior forward Candice Stefanic (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) scored off a cross from junior forward Charlotte MacDonald (Bluemont, Va./Foxcroft) at 25:33.
W&L knotted the game at 2-2 just 2:45 into the second half as McDonald scored off an assist from senior midfielder Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth). However, the Eagles took the lead back just 1:02 later when Steele scored her third goal of the game unassisted.
Sophomore forward Ashlin Jones (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Katlyn Taliaferro (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) to make it 4-2 at the 50:25 mark and Steele found the cage at 55:24 to produce the final margin.
For the game, the Eagles held a 21-10 advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
Axelrod played 40:55 in goal and recorded four saves with two goals allowed. First-year Jacqueline Llewellyn (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) saw 29:05 in cage for the Generals, posting three saves with three goals allowed.
Sophomore Megan McLaughlin (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) played the first 53:00 in goal for Mary Washington, making two saves with two goals allowed. First-Year Katie Kolobielski (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) played the final 17:00 for UMW, making one save.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Bridgewater for a 7:00 pm contest.
