HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team picked up its first win of the season in a tri-match at Stevens Institute on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals were defeated by the home-standing Ducks, 45-3, but recovered from an 18-0 hole to knock off Gettysburg by a score of 27-18.
Sophomore Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) was the lone winner for the Generals (1-10, 1-5) against Stevens, notching an 8-7 decision over Colin Navickas at 174 pounds.
Against the Bullets, the Generals trailed 18-0 entering the 157-pound bout. First-year Alex Niemann (Frenchtown, N.J. / Delaware Valley Regional) got things started with a pin over Colin Furth in 1:52. First-year Mac Evarts (Millersville, Pa. / Penn Manor) then received a forfeit win at 165 pounds and Tassoni posted a 9-5 decision over Jared Leon at 174 pounds to make it an 18-15 match.
Sophomore Zac Richey (Swoope, Va. / Buffalo Gap) logged a 6-2 win over Pat Thomas in the 184-pound match to knot the score at 18-18 and W&L took its first lead with a win by fall (2:14) from first-year Bennett Lewis (St. Louis, Mo. / Westminster Christian) over Camden Stoops at 197 pounds. Sophomore Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) then cemented the victory with a 2-0 decision over Nick Diunizio in the 285-pound weight class.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it caps the regular season with a pair of matches at Muhlenberg at 12:00 pm. The Generals will wrestle the Mules and Ursinus.
