Box Score HOLLINS, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) hit a three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to force overtime and the Generals scored the first five points of the extra session to post a 63-61 road win over Hollins on Tuesday evening.
W&L (6-1, 1-1) led 54-50 with 3:07 left in regulation following a pair of free throws by junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick). However, Hollins (2-7, 0-1) used a 7-0 run over the next 2:29 to assume a 57-54 lead with 38 seconds remaining. Perszyk missed a triple with 33 seconds left, but sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) rebounded the miss and Perszyk knocked down her second attempt following a W&L timeout with 28 seconds left. Hollins senior forward Britney Campbell then missed a jumper with two seconds left and the teams headed to overtime.
In the extra period, the Generals grabbed the early lead on a jumper by first-year forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Central Catholic) 35 seconds into overtime. Corvino followed with a three-pointer at 3:12 for a 62-57 lead, but Hollins closed to within one point (62-61) on a Campbell jumper with 1:09 left. The Generals turned it over the next time down, but Campbell missed with seven seconds left and Redding was fouled after rebounding with five seconds left. She hit 1-of-2 from the line and Hollins failed to get a shot in the final seconds.
With the win, W&L ended a five-game losing streak to Hollins. The Generals shot just 19-of-58 (.328) from the floor, but out-scored Hollins, 18-6, at the free throw stripe.
Corvino scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed a season-high nine rebounds. Clifford notched 12 points, six rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks, while junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) posted eight points and 10 boards. Redding chipped in seven points, six rebounds and five blocks.
Hollins was led by sophomore guard Jewellanna Parfitt's 15 points and 11 rebounds. Campbell had 13 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists, while first-year center Hannah Moss had 12 points.
Washington and Lee will now break for the holidays before returning to action on December 29-30 in the Catholic University Tournament. The Generals will play Catholic in the opener at 1:00 pm.
