W&L Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss, 73-63 at VWC

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan used a 13-2 run early in the second half to post a 73-63 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Batten Center.

The Generals (4-1, 0-1) trailed 32-31 at the break, but took a two-point lead (34-32) just 10 seconds into the second half on a three-pointer by senior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison).  However, the Marlins (2-2, 1-0) scored the next eight points, including six straight from senior forward Nancy Kelly, as part of the 13-2 run that gave them a 45-36 lead with 15:00 remaining.

W&L sliced it to a four-point game (47-43) on a three-pointer by first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) just 1:47 later, but the Marlins pushed out to a 12-point advantage (56-44) following a layup by senior guard Brittany Glasco with 10:12 remaining.  The Generals got no closer than seven points (65-58) the rest of the way as the Marlins posted their seventh straight win over W&L.

The Generals shot just 34.3 percent (24-70) from the floor and were outscored 19-6 at the free throw line.  Junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) led W&L with 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from distance.  Perszyk and Gauf each totaled 10 points, while sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) posted eight points, seven rebounds, four steals and three rebounds.

Virginia Wesleyan shot 50.0 percent (25-50) from the floor and hit 19-of-25 (.760) free throws.  Senior guard Andrea Paphites tallied a game-high 20 points on 11-of-12 shooting from the charity stripe, while Glasco notched 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor.

Washington and Lee will now break for the holiday, before returning to action on December 6 with a 2:00 pm home date against Bridgewater.
