W&L Women's Basketball Defeats UMW in OT, 64-62

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee recovered from a nine-point deficit in the final 3:30 of regulation to post a 64-62 overtime victory over Mary Washington in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.

Junior forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) started the comeback at the 3:30 mark of the second half when she made one of two free throws to make it a 51-43 game.  Junior forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) followed with an old fashioned three-point play at 2:44 to make it 51-46 at the 2:44 mark and first-year guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a single jumper for UMW to pull the Generals (4-0) within one point (53-52) with 1:25 left in regulation.

The Eagles (2-2) stretched their lead to 55-52 with 29 seconds remaining, but sophomore guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) hit a layup and was fouled with two seconds remaining to make it 55-54.  She completed the free throw for the tying three-point play and the teams headed to overtime.

In the extra session, W&L gained the early advantage on a Clifford free throw just six seconds in and extended to a 62-57 lead on a Perszyk triple with 3:02 remaining.  Five-straight from the Eagles tied it at 62-62 with 1:58 left, but Clifford gave the Generals the lead for good splitting a pair of free throws with 1:27 remaining for a 63-62 edge.  After drawing an offensive foul with one second remaining, junior guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and UMW did not get a shot off as the Generals claimed the win.

W&L led for much of the first half, before the Eagles closed on an 11-2 run to assume a 24-17 lead at the break.  UMW held the lead until Clifford gave W&L its first lead since the 3:11 mark of the first half.

Clifford finished with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the floor.  Perszyk tallied 16 points on 4-of-10 from long-range, while Corvino notched 13 points.

Mary Washington was led by senior guard Erin Drumheller's 14 points.  First-year forward Kelsey Dean and sophomore center Brianne Comden added nine points each.

Washington and Lee will return to the court on Tuesday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 6:00 pm contest.
