LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team shot 28.8 percent (19-of-66) from the floor in a 64-53 loss to 24th-ranked Christopher Newport on Friday in the Warner Center.

The Generals (2-2) trailed 14-10 with 11:26 left in the first half. W&L went on an 11-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 21-14 lead with 5:10 left before intermission. During the scoring spurt, junior guard Darren Douglas (Elmsford, N.Y./Rye Country Day) and sophomore guard Andy Kleinlein (Chesterfield, Mo./Chaminade College Prep) each scored four points. The Captains (2-0) cut the lead to five (25-20) by halftime.

CNU slowly chipped away at the Blue and White lead in the second half, and regained a one-point advantage, 34-33, on a layup by first-year guard Marcus Carter (Williamsburg, Va./Bruton) with 12:27 left in the game. The Captains would not relinquish the lead the rest of the contest, and eventually stretched the advantage to 13 points before reaching the final margin of 64-53.

Sophomore forward Tim Daly (Richmond, Va/James River High School) paced Christopher Newport with 16 of his 22 points coming in the second half. He also added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Carter added 13 points for the Captains.

Junior forward Andrew Franz (Charlotte, N.C./Ravenscroft) led the Generals with 18 points on 6-of-14 from the floor. He also had six rebounds and three assists. Douglas and first-year forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) each netted eight points, while senior forward Patrick O'Connor (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) grabbed nine rebounds.

CNU shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the floor, 23.3 percent (7-of-30) from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent (13-of-17) from the foul line. Along with their numbers from the floor, the Generals went 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from long distance and 11-of-19 (57.9 percent) from the charity stripe.

W&L travels to Catholic on Tuesday for a 5:00 pm contest.
