W&L Football Rides Strong Finish to 40-23 Win Over Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee erupted for 26 points in the fourth quarter to take a 40-23 win over Shenandoah in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

Shenandoah (4-6, 2-5) assumed a 23-14 lead with 1:54 left in the third quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Drew Ferguson (Mechanicsville, Va./Mt. Union) to sophomore tight end Miles Green (North Potomac, Md./Wootton).

The Generals drove 71 yards on 11 plays on the ensuing possession to cut it to a 23-21 game on a 6-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Evan Hinkle (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run).

W&L forced a three-and-out by the Hornets on the next possession and then drove 70 yards on nine plays, taking a 27-23 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) with 7:59 remaining.  The ensuing two-point conversion run failed.

Shenandoah drove to the W&L 32-yardline on the next series, but the Generals held on downs.  Sophomore running back Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored on a 57-yard touchdown run five plays later to give W&L a 34-23 lead with 3:38 left.  The W&L defense held on downs at the SU 6-yardline on the next series and Hollerith scored his third touchdown of the game two plays later for the final margin.

Washington and Lee rushed for a season-high 460 yards and totaled 521 yards of total offense in the contest.  Dugan rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown on just six carries, while Hollerith gained 122 yards and three scores on 22 rushes.  Hinkle finished with 93 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries, and first-year running back Walker Brand (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) tallied 72 yards rushing and 28 yards receiving.  Sophomore quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's) completed 7-of-8 passes for 61 yards with one interception and he rushed for 27 yards on 12 carries.  First-year defensive back Michael Shields (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) led the defense with 11 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Shenandoah gained 357 total yards led by Ferguson, who completed 21-of-35 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns with one interception.  Sophomore running back Cedrick Delaney (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries and junior wide receiver Brandon Adams (Naruna, Va./William Campbell) snared six passes for 65 yards.  Green finished with two catches for 11 yards and two touchdowns.  Junior linebacker Michael Messick (Mechanicsville, Va./Chopticon) led the Hornets' defense with a game-high 16 tackles.

With the win, W&L ends the 2014 campaign with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-5 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
