Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Emory & Henry gained 568 yards of total offense in posting a 36-9 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Wasps (7-1, 4-1) jumped out to a 28-0 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back in claiming their first win against the Generals (1-7, 1-4) since the 2009 season.
First-year quarterback Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C./Appalachian St.) tossed a pair of touchdown passes and first-year running back Isaiah Rodgers (Canton, Ga./Creekview) rushed for two touchdowns as E&H raced out to a 28-0 lead with 7:56 left in the first half.
W&L got on the board with 5:19 left in the second quarter when sophomore running back Evan Hinkle (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) finished an 8-play, 77-yard drive with a 9-yard touchdown run. The Generals fumbled the snap on the PAT attempt and E&H junior linebacker Rennel Marshall (Rustburg, Va./Liberty Christian) scooped it up and returned it for a two-point conversion and a 30-6 lead.
The Generals added a 37-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Matt Underhill (Bethesda, Md./Landon) with 29 seconds left in the half to make it 30-9 at the break.
The second half was marred by turnovers as the Wasps suffered three lost fumbles and the Generals had two lost fumbles. E&H senior running back Joe Vaughn (Gate City, Va./Gate City) produced the only score of the second half when he plunged over the goal line from 1-yard out with 11:29 left in the fourth quarter.
W&L ran for 285 yards and had 364 total yards led by first-year running back Walker Brand (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley), who tallied 82 yards on 13 carries. Sophomore running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) gained 64 yards on 16 carries, while Hinkle had 60 yards and a score on 10 carries. Sophomore running back Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) rushed for 34 yards and caught six passes for 43 yards and sophomore quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Comm./St. Luke's) went 9-of-19 passing for 79 yards. Senior safety Brandon Taylor (Petersburg, Va./Dinwiddie) and first-year defensive back Michael Shields (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) both made 10 tackles to lead the defense. Taylor had two fumble recoveries and Shields had one interception.
Saxton led the Wasps by completing 29-of-39 passes for 379 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Rodgers rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries and caught five balls for 90 yards. Senior defensive back Clint Peregoy (Salem, Va./Salem) totaled a team-best 11 tackles.
Washington and Lee is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Catholic for a 1:00 pm contest.
