Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. -- Sophomore forward David Cohen (Chesterfield, N.J. / Northern Burlington County Regional) and first-year midfielder Sam Knapke (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Benet Academy) scored second-half goals to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon at Sprint Field.
The Generals (9-3, 4-3) and the Hornets (4-10, 1-6) played a scoreless first half despite a total of 19 shots (W&L 11, SU 8) in the opening 45 minutes of play.
W&L got on the board first in the contest when Cohen beat SU first-year goalkeeper Matthew Poell in the 58th minute. The Hornets responded 16 seconds later when first-year midfielder Kevin Kokolis scored off of an assist from junior midfielder Eduardo Santiago to tie the game at 1-1. However, Knapke netted the game-winner at the 88:49 mark off of an assist from sophomore defender Cary Carabasi (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton).
Senior keeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) played 51:50 in goal and recorded four saves. Junior goalkeeper Kieran McQuilkin (New Canaan, Conn. / King & Low – Heywood Thomas) saw the remaining 38:10 in net and faced one shot. Poell played the entire match and posted eight saves for the Hornets.
Washington and Lee controlled play in the field throughout the contest, holding a 21-10 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 3:00 pm contest.
