Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Hampden-Sydney senior quarterback Nash Nance (Calhoun, Ga./Tennessee) threw for three touchdowns, rushed for two more and had a touchdown reception in leading the Tigers to a 55-32 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday at Wilson Field.
The Tigers (4-1, 2-0) scored their most points in the history of the series, racking up 499 yards of total offense and scoring on eight of their first nine possessions.
Nance recorded all three types of touchdowns in the opening half, rushing for a 1-yard score and tossing a 35-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Michael Mey (Glen Allen, Va./VMI) in posting a 14-3 lead after the first quarter.
Senior wide receiver Holton Walker (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) jump-started a 21-point second quarter for the Tigers when he hit Nance with a 31-yard touchdown pass off of a lateral and throwback. The Generals (0-5, 0-2) added 14 points of their own in the quarter, as sophomore running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) scored on a 3-yard touchdown run and first-year wide receiver Witt Hawkins (Memphis, Tenn./Memphis University School) hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's) to make it a 35-17 game at the break.
Nance tossed his third touchdown of the game at the 12:09 mark of the third quarter, finding senior wide receiver Fuller Clark (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) with a 10-yard pass for a 42-17 lead. Hollerith scored his second touchdown of the game on a 2-yard touchdown run at 6:17 of the third quarter and H-SC senior kicker Max Antwerpes (Mainz, Germany/Kenston Forest) booted a pair of field goals to make it 48-24 with 13:33 left to play.
W&L pulled to within two possessions with 10:29 remaining when first-year quarterback Matt Sgro (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) hooked up with sophomore tight end Jack Taylor (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) for a 10-yard touchdown. Sgro then ran in a two-point conversion to make it 48-32. The Generals forced a Tiger turnover on the next possession when junior linebacker Christian Cranford (Greensboro, N.C./Page) stripped Clark and returned the ball nine yards to the H-SC 33-yardline. However, the Generals were sacked on the first play and failed on downs three plays later. The Tigers then drove 70 yards on seven plays, with Nance scoring on a 6-yard plunge for the final margin.
W&L gained 445 yards of total offense in the contest led by Nelson, who completed 11-of-19 passes for 104 yards and a touchdown and rushed 12 times for 92 yards. Sophomore running back Jimmy Dugan (Rye, N.Y./Rye) gained 65 yards on 11 carries, while Hollerith gained 50 yards and scored two touchdowns on 13 carries. Hawkins caught three passes for 63 yards and a touchdown, and rushed twice for 51 yards. Cranford posted six tackles, to go along with the forced fumble and fumble recovery.
Nance completed 19-of-27 passes for 359 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 15 times for 42 yards and the two scores, along with catching the 31-yard touchdown pass. Walker tallied 161 yards on five catches and senior running back Brady Macko (Kill Devil Hills, N.C./First Flight) notched 54 yards and a touchdown on 12 rushes. Senior safety Shreve Rohle (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) registered eight tackles and an interception.
Washington and Lee returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.
