Shand & Cannon Lead W&L Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep of Shenandoah

LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore middle blocker Mackenzie Shand (Saline, Mich./Saline) and junior outside hitter Kasey Cannon (North Wales, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) led the Washington and Lee volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over Shenandoah on Wednesday at the Warner Center.

Shand totaled nine kills on 14 attempts with one error for a .571 hitting percentage and added two blocks. Cannon led the team with 10 kills, while totaling nine digs.

The Generals (17-1, 5-0 ODAC) made quick work of the Hornets (10-7, 3-2 ODAC), winning 25-18, 25-9, 25-19. W&L was efficient on the offensive end, hitting .284 (34K, 9E, 88TA) as a team.

Shenandoah struggled all night with 23 kills and 22 errors on 103 total attempts for a .010 hitting percentage. The Hornets also totaled six service errors, seven reception errors, two ball handling errors and five blocking errors.

Junior setter Alex Kinzer (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) tallied 26 assists, four kills and four digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Sam Moench (St. Petersburg, Fla./Berkeley Prep) notched a team-high 11 digs.

First-year defensive specialist Brandi Griffith (Winchester, Va./James Wood) led Shenandoah with a match-high 14 digs. Sophomore setter Jasmine Callahan (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) recorded a double-double with 16 assists and 11 digs.

The Generals have won 16 straight matches, which is the longest streak since winning a program-best 25 during the 2007 season. W&L also extended its home winning streak to 20. The program record for consecutive home victories is 25, which happened over the 2005, 2006 and 2007 seasons.

The Blue and White returns to action on Tuesday, October 7, when it travels to Hollins for a 7:00 pm contest.
