W&L Women's Basketball Edges Eagles, 69-66

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore guard Paige Corvino (Clarendon Hills, Ill. / Fenwick) hit the game-winning free throws with 23 seconds in the game to push the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 69-66 win over Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

With the game tied at 66-66, Bridgewater (5-11, 3-5) senior forward Molly Shelley fouled Corvino with 23 ticks on the clock. Corvino made both foul shots, giving the W&L (4-11, 2-6) a 68-66 lead and then stole the ball on the ensuing possession and was sent back to the line for two shots. She then hit 1-of-2 and the Eagles couldn't get a shot off as the Generals picked up their first win in seven games.

Bridgewater led 66-64 with 2:08 on the clock, when junior guard Annie Gauf (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) was fouled and made 1-of-2 free throws to pull the Generals within one (66-65). On the ensuing possession, sophomore forward Shelbi Hendricks (Louisville, Ky. / Kentucky Country Day) was fouled on the rebound and went to the line for two shots. Hendricks made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and tied the game at 66-66 with 55 seconds left to play, setting up Corvino's winning foul shots.

The Generals controlled the beginning of the first half as they held a steady lead until 16:26 when the Eagles took a 9-8 advantage off a free throw from senior forward Holly Morgan (Staunton, Va. / Buffalo Gap). Bridgewater saw its lead grow to as many as eight points over the next 7:41, but the Generals closed out the first half with a 16-6 run to take a 35-33 advantage at the half.

For the game, W&L shot 45.0 percent (27-60) from the field, while the Eagles shot 40.3 percent on 25-of-62 shooting. The Blue and White outrebounded Bridgewater, 40-31, and had a 17-13 advantage in assists.

First-year guard Jackie Clifford (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) paced the Generals with 15 points and five rebounds, while adding two assists, two blocks and one steal. Sophomore forward Wesleigh Vick (Raleigh, N.C. / St. David's School) notched 14 points and eight rebounds and first-year forward Samantha Sharman (Huntersville, N.C. / Hopewell) added 12 points and four boards. Gauf chipped in seven points and dished out a game- and career-high nine assists on the afternoon.

For the Eagles, Shelley led all scorers with 21 points. Sophomore guard Cassidy Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va. / Turner Ashby) and first-year forward Heather Cantrell (Singers Glen, Va. / Broadway) tallied 13 points. Cantrell also pulled in a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked three shots. Morgan chipped in with 11 points, three assists and four rebounds.

W&L returns to the court on Tuesday, when it hosts Shenandoah for a 7:00 pm contest.
