LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened Centennial Conference competition on Saturday by hosting the Merchant Marine Academy and McDaniel.
The Generals dropped both matches, falling to the Mariners by a score of 39-8 and to the Green Terror by a score of 24-11.
In the loss to USMMA (8-1, 3-0), the Generals (0-6, 0-2) claimed two individual victories. First-year Michael Rodgers (Allentown, Pa. / Allentown Central Catholic) logged an 8-4 decision over first-year Nathan Twito (Ames, Iowa / Ames) at 141 pounds and sophomore 184-pounder Zac Richey (Swoope, Va. / Buffalo Gap) posted a win by technical fall, besting first-year William Fry (Sturgis, Mich. / Sturgis) 16-1 in 5:50.
Against McDaniel (6-7, 1-1), W&L won three of the seven contested matches. Sophomore Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) got things started for the Generals with a 9-1 major decision over sophomore Ricky Tisinger (Edinburg, Va. / Stonewall Jackson) at 174 pounds. Richey followed with a hard-fought 6-5 victory over sophomore Nick Cross (Centreville, Md. / Queen Anne's) at 184 pounds, while first-year Bennett Lewis (St. Louis, Mo. / Westminster Christian) notched a 17-3 major decision over first-year Dakota Wilhelm (La Plata, Md. / La Plata) at 197 pounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it wrestles a quad against NYU, Johns Hopkins and Hunter at Hunter College in New York City.
