Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team struck first but was unable to maintain the lead as it tied Catholic, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
First-year defender Patrick Barry (West Roxbury, Mass./Roxbury Latin) netted the first goal of the game at the 41:37 mark off an assist from senior midfielder Alex Zelinski (Rochester Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) to give the Generals the 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Blue and White (1-0-3) maintained its lead until the 76th minute, when CUA (2-1-1) sophomore midfielder Nico Bartolomeo (Pewaukee, Wisc./Pewaukee) collected a pass from junior midfielder Joe Taylor (Eldersburg, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to knot the score at 1-1 and send the match into overtime.
Despite registering four shots over both overtime sessions, including a Barry header that hit the side post, the Generals couldn't capitalize as the game ended in the 1-1 draw.
For the game, the Cardinals outshot the Generals 17-13 and held an 8-7 edge in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) played all 110 minutes in goal, finishing with seven saves. Junior Torsten Meuschke (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) also played the entirety for CUA and stopped five shots.
The Generals return to action on Saturday, September 14th, travelling to Ferrum for a 7:00 pm contest.
