W&L Field Hockey Loses to 14th-Ranked Lynchburg, 3-0

LEXINGTON, Va. — Facing a ranked opponent for the second consecutive game, the Washington and Lee field hockey team fell to 14th-ranked Lynchburg on Tuesday, 3-0, at the W&L Turf Field.

The Hornets (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) took a one-goal lead into halftime, and then scored two tallies in the second to top the Generals (1-5, 0-1 ODAC) in the ODAC opener for both teams.

The first goal of the contest came in the 24th minute off a scrum in the scoring circle. Lynchburg's Nicole Marburger (Boyertown, Pa./Oley Valley) came away with the ball on the far side, and sent a shot across the cage just inside the near post.

The Blue and White had its best scoring opportunity at the end of the first half. W&L controlled the ball in the Hornets' zone, and earned a penalty corner as time expired. On the ensuring play, first-year forward Maggie Waxter's (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) shot from the center of the circle was stopped, and sophomore forward Sydney Tomaso's (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) rebound was deflected away by Marburger to end the stanza.

LC scored in the third minute of the second half to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Meredith Bradsher (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) fired the ball into the scoring circle and senior attack Kelli Williams (Middletown, Del./William Penn) deflected it into the back of the cage.

The Hornets notched their final tally with seven seconds remaining on a goal from sophomore attack Catherin Rogerson (Midlothian, Va./Cosby). Lynchburg led in shots, 22-5, and in penalty corners, 8-4.

Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Axelrod (Denver, Colo./Kent Denver School) made 10 saves for the Generals, while first-year defender Noelani Schulmeyer (Glen Arm, Md./St. Paul's School), junior defender Caroline Andress (Charlotte, N.C./Episcopal) and senior midfielder Victoria Van Natten (Towson, Md./Towson) each had a defensive save.

Senior goalkeeper Jordan Seeley (Louisville, Ky./Louisville Collegiate) earned the victory for the Hornets with two saves.

W&L plays at Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 11:30 am.
