Box Score GRANVILLE, Ohio – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team opened its 2013 campaign with a 0-0 draw with Denison on Friday evening at Barclay-Thomsen Field.
Despite registering 17 shots, including two shots on goal during regulation, W&L (0-0-1) was unable to slip the ball past Denison's senior goalkeeper Matt Wagner.
Denison had the best opportunities to get on the scoreboard during the extra sesions, but W&L junior keeper Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy) held the Big Red at bay, stopping a pair of shots in the final minutes to preserve the shutout.
For the game, Denison led W&L in shots, 20-17, and held an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, Civitarese played all 110:00 for the Generals, recording four saves. Wagner also played the entirety, stopping two shots for the Big Red (0-0-1).
W&L will return to action Saturday, when it faces Case Western Reserve at Denison for a 6:00 pm contest.
