W&L Wrestling Posts a 1-2 Record at Gettysburg Quad

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team claimed its first win of the season on Saturday at the Gettysburg Quad.  The Generals knocked off the home-standing Bullets, 24-22, but fell to Stevens (37-6) and 16th-ranked Messiah (48-6).

In the loss to Stevens, W&L claimed just one victory as first-year 174-pounder Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) pinned Stevens' Zachary Bass in 5:56.  Sophomore 149-pounder Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass. / Brooks School) was the lone winner for the Generals against Messiah, posting a win by fall (4:57) over Greg Kabakjian.

In the Generals' final match against the Bullets, Gettysburg claimed a 9-6 lead after Matt Spano notched an 8-2 decision over W&L first-year Tyler Kaelin (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) at 141 pounds.  Duffey knotted the match at 9-9 following a 7-0 decision over Jonathan Faul at 149 pounds, but GC grabbed a 12-9 lead when Eddie Carroll posted a 6-5 decision over sophomore Matt Howell (Jacksonville, Fla. / Bolles School) at 157 pounds.

Gettysburg's lead grew to 18-9 when Tyler Cunningham pinned W&L first-year Zac Richey (Swoope, Va. / Buffalo Gap) in 1:54 at 165 pounds.  However, Tassoni got the points back in the 174-pound match, pinning Joe Fiore in 6:57 to make it 18-15.
