Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) rushed for a career-high 184 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries as Washington and Lee defeated Catholic, 14-10, in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (4-3, 3-2) turned the ball over three times in the first half, but entered the break clinging to a 7-3 lead. Senior running back Luke Terna (Wheaton, Ill./Benet Academy) gave W&L a 7-0 lead at the 11:44 mark of the first quarter when he capped an 11-play, 75-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run.
Catholic (3-4, 1-4) cut it to 7-3 with 4:17 left in the first half following a W&L fumble that gave the Cardinals the ball on the Generals' 45-yardline. First-year kicker Peter Rosa (Darnestown, Md./St, John's College) then ended a 12-play drive that gained just 35 yards with a 28-yard field goal.
The Cardinals cashed in on another W&L turnover midway through the third quarter for a 10-7 lead at the 7:11 mark. First-year quarterback Charlie Nelson (Redding, Conn./St. Luke's) was intercepted at the Catholic 24-yardline and CUA sophomore quarterback T.J. Tutone (Reston, Va./Paul IV Catholic) found senior wide receiver Tanner Keefe (Bow, N.H./Groton School) with a 44-yard touchdown pass four plays later for the Cardinal's first lead of the game.
The Generals created a turnover of their own two possessions later with Catholic driving in W&L territory. First-year defensive lineman Sam Bramlett (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) sacked CUA sophomore quarterback E.J. Montgomery (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) at the W&L 42-yardline, stripping the ball away and recovering it himself. W&L then drove 58 yards in 10 plays as Hollerith scored from 8-yards out with 10:14 left in the game for a 14-10 lead.
W&L forced two more Catholic turnovers in the fourth quarter in holding on for the 4-point victory, its fifth-straight win over the Cardinals.
Hollerith led the W&L offense, which gained 353 total yards, including 338 yards on the ground. Terna totaled 68 yards and one touchdown on 19 carries, while junior running back Austin Eisenhofer (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) amassed 66 yards on 12 carries. The Generals' defense forced four CUA turnovers led by senior safety Walter Ramsey (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster), who posted a team-best 11 tackles and one fumble recovery.
Catholic rushed for just 39 yards on 27 carries and finished with just 282 yards of total offense. Montgomery completed 18-of-27 passes for 105 yards and Tutone completed 11-of-23 attempts for 138 yards and one touchdown. They were each intercepted once. Senior wide receiver Andrew Oullette (Salisbury, Mass./Central Catholic) caught a team-best 10 passes for 74 yards and junior defensive back R.J. Allison (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) notched 12 tackles and one fumble recovery.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm contest.
