W&L Women's Soccer Defeats Hollins, 6-1

ROANOKE, Va. – The Hollins women's soccer team scored its first goal against Washington and Lee since the 2001 season, but fell to the Generals by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Hollins (2-7, 1-4) got the on board in the 18th minute when Maran O'Neill scored unassisted to give HU a 1-0 lead. 

The Generals (9-1, 5-0) retaliated with a pair of goals over the next 11 minutes and change to assume a 2-1 lead at the break.  First-year defender Katie Clemmons (Phoenix, Ariz. / Chaparral) evened the score at the 26:39 mark when she scored off an assist from junior midfielder Haley Ward (Federal Way, Wash. / Federal Way).  W&L then took the lead for good when sophomore midfielder Becca Dunn (Houston, Texas / Memorial) scored her first of three goals on the day unassisted at the 28:44 mark.

After the break, the Generals extended to a 5-1 lead with three goals in a span of 4:22 early in the second half.  Dunn scored off an assist from first-year midfielder Katie Pettit (San Diego, Calif. / Scripps Ranch) at 54:13 and first-year midfielder Kate Sarfert (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) scored off an assist from junior midfielder Holley Beasley (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) just 37 seconds later for a 4-1 lead.  Dunn capped off the three-goal run with a score off a helper from first-year forward Camille LeJeune (Lafayette, La. / Episcopal School of Acadiana) at 58:35.

Ward ended the scoring when she beat Hollins goalkeeper Megan McKee unassisted at 65:56.

Washington and Lee held a 30-4 advantage in shots and had a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.  Dunn's three goals paced the Generals' scoring effort, while Ward finished with one goal and one assist.  Senior goalkeeper Kingsley Schroeder (Dayton, Ohio / Westminster School/Miami Valley) played all 60 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.

McKee tallied 12 saves in goal for Hollins.

Washington and Lee, winners of seven-straight games, will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Randolph for a 12:00 pm contest.
