Box Score BETHANY, W.Va. – The Washington and Lee men's soccer team finished Day 2 at the Fuzzy Williams Memorial Tourney with a 4-2 victory over Bethany Saturday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Zach Clarke (Beaumont, Texas/Monsignor Kelly Catholic) sent a pass to sophomore midfielder Zach Colby (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission) for a goal at 2:30 to put the Generals up, 1-0, early in the contest. Bethany (0-2) answered soon after with an unassisted tally by junior forward Arkangelo James to tie the game at 1-1 at the 5:30 mark.
With a helper by first-year midfielder Robin Gollbach (Schweinfurt, Germany/Walther-Ranthenau School), Colby netted his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute, giving W&L a 2-1 advantage going into the intermission.
The second half started slowly with neither team making a score until the 63rd minute when Gollbach knocked in an unassisted shot to bring the Generals' lead to two (3-1). At the 69:00 mark, Colby completed a hat trick for the day off an assist from senior defender Basti Richter (Gauting, Germany/Darlington School) to give W&L its fourth goal of the contest.
The Bisons attempted to make a comeback late in the game as James notched his second unassisted goal, but the Blue and White's tough defense was able to hold off Bethany to claim the 4-2 win.
In net for the Generals was sophomore Albert Civitarese (Bridgeville, Pa./Sewickley Academy), who recorded five saves and two goals-against while playing the entire 90:00.
First-year Skylar Kinnard manned the goal for the Bisons for the entirety of the contest, registering five saves and four goals-against.
W&L returns to field on Saturday, September 8, when it hosts Stevenson for a 2:00 pm game.
