Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball
team led from wire-to-wire as it swept the season series with
Randolph-Macon for the first time ever with a 78-67 victory over
the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Generals (10-11, 8-8) shot 49.1 percent (27-55) from the
floor in the contest, hitting seven of their first 11 shots in
opening a 15-2 lead just 5:48 into the contest. Meanwhile,
the Yellow Jackets (12-10, 10-7) went 1-of-14 from the floor before
senior center Taylor Wieczorek scored at the 13:46 mark to make it
an 11-point game (15-4).
Washington and Lee continued to pour it on through the opening
20 minutes, extending to a 21-point lead (37-16) on a layup by
junior forward Rachel
Warrick (Herndon, Va./Langley) with 3:01 to play in the half en
route to a 39-20 lead at halftime.
W&L kept the pressure on R-MC at the start of the second
half, using a layup by senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro,
N.C./Ragsdale) and a Warrick jumper to extend to a 43-20 lead just
44 seconds into the final frame. The Generals' lead swelled
to 27 points (55-28) on a three-pointer by first-year guard Annie Gauf (Vienna,
Va./James Madison) at the 14:57 mark, but Randolph-Macon chipped
away at the W&L advantage, eventually cutting it to 12 points
(61-49) on a pair of free throws by senior guard Jillian Asay with
6:47 left to play. However, W&L responded with five
straight points to push the lead back to 17 points (66-49) and the
lead remained as much as 19 points (78-59) with just 2:05 to
play.
The Generals had five players score in double figures led by
Ingram, who scored a season-best 28 points on 7-of-14 shooting from
the field, including 4-of-8 from distance. She also nailed
all 10 of her free throws, grabbed seven rebounds and dished six
assists. Junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga,
Tenn./Baylor) notched 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Warrick also
contributed 14 points. Senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro,
N.C./Chatham Central) added 10 points and eight boards.
Randolph-Macon was limited to 32.9 percent (23-70) shooting for
the game, including 1-of-15 (.067) from the three-point line.
The Yellow Jackets were led by Wieczorek's 17 points and 13
rebounds. First-year guard Sarah Parsons had 13 points and
sophomore forward Christina Phelps had 10 points and six
rebounds.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it travels
to Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
