W&L Wrestling Competes at W&J Invitational

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team was in action on Saturday, competing in the Washington & Jefferson Invitational.  No Generals placed at the event, however, four grapplers finished with a 2-2 record on the day.

First-year Tyler Kaelin (Crestwood, Ky. / Oldham County) notched a 2-2 record at 133 pounds, while junior Dan Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Bolles School) went 2-2 at 157 pounds.  First-year Ron Tassoni (Media, Pa. / Haverford School) posted a 2-2 record at 174 pounds and first-year Grant Cokeley (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) finished 2-2 at 285 pounds.

Kaelin opened his day with a win by fall (1:14) over Brendan Omicioli of Waynesburg, then fell to Aaron Smith of Mercyhurst, 8-7.  He then notched another win by fall, this time over Xander Straughter of Case Western Reserve in 4:12, before dropping a 7-5 decision to Zach Walker of Baldwin-Wallace.

Igel opened with a pin of Heidelberg's Brad Temple in 6:16, but was bested by Josh Etzel of W&J by a score of 4-2.  He then registered an 8-5 win over Brandan Collins of Thiel but finished his day with a 7-3 loss to Garrett Chase of Baldwin-Wallace.

Tassoni suffered an 8-6 loss to Gary Lantz of Pitt-Johnstown in his opener, before defeating Andrew Leis of Heidelberg, 17-2.  He then defeated Wade Durbin of PSU-Fayette, 2-0, before falling to Cameron Fine of Waynesburg by fall (0:43).

Cokeley opened with a 3-0 loss to Kevin Heyman of Thiel, but notched a 6-2 win over Andre Ellis of PSU-Allegheny.  He followed with a 3-2 win over Nathan Spinetti of PSU-Fayette, before losing by fall (3:58) to end his day.

Washington and Lee will return to action next Sunday as it travels to Division I George Mason for a 2:00 pm dual meet.
