GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team
competed in the Gettysburg Quad on Saturday afternoon, finishing
the event with one win and a pair of losses.
The Generals (2-12, 0-1) opened with a 31-16 Centennial
Conference loss to the host Bullets and then fell to Hunter College
by a score of 47-3. W&L then rebounded to post a 22-15
victory over Washington & Jefferson in the final match of the
day.
In the loss to the Bullets (2-1, 1-0), the Generals fell behind
6-0 following a forfeit loss at 125 pounds, but they then won the
next four weight classes to claim a 16-6 lead heading into the
165-pound weight class.
Senior Sam
Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) posted a 9-5 win over Matt
Spano at 133 pounds and first-year Conor Duffey (Boxford,
Mass./Brooks School) logged a 12-2 major decision over Tony
Stannell at 141 pounds for a 7-6 lead. Sophomore H.T. Kotchinian
(Lowell, Mass./Belmont Hill) then recorded a 7-2 victory at 149
pounds for a 10-6 lead and the advantage swelled to 16-6 following
a forfeit win by sophomore Dan Igel
(Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles School) at 156 pounds. The
momentum changed hands in the following match, as senior David Dennis
(Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) fell to Zach Thompson at 165 pounds and
the Bullets recorded wins at the next two weight classes before
taking forfeit victories at 197 and 285 pounds in claiming the
conference win.
In the loss to Hunter (5-3), the Generals claimed just one
victory as Dennis recorded a 2-1 decision over Jesse Capello-Colon
at 165 pounds.
In the win over the Presidents (1-4), W&L jumped out to a
22-0 lead before dropping the final three matches. After the
125-pound weight class was a double forfeit, the Generals took a
3-0 lead following a 7-6 decision by Campbell over Zachary
Cecchetti at 133 pounds. Duffey notched a 6-5 win over Josh
Etzel at 141 pounds for a 6-0 advantage and the lead grew to 9-0 on
a 6-2 win by Kotchinian over Rojo Stephenson at 149 pounds.
Igel gave W&L a 13-0 lead after a major decision (14-6) over
Chris Leva at 157 pounds and Dennis logged a 2-1 win over David
Dibendetto at 165 pounds for a 16-0 lead. First-year Marino Orlandi (Stanton,
N.J./Blair Academy) completed the run with a pin of Matt Barton in
4:07 for a 22-0 lead.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts
the W&L Invitational at the Warner Center beginning at 10:00
am.
