Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New
Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) threw for two touchdowns and ran for
another as the Washington and Lee football team defeated Sewanee,
31-14, on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The win was W&L's seventh in a row over the Tigers and
extended the Generals' regular-season winning streak to nine
games.
The Generals (2-0) opened the scoring with 2:23 left in the
first quarter with a 10-play, 73-yard drive that was finished off
by a 16-yard touchdown run from junior running back Sasha Vandalov (Vienna,
Va./James Madison).
The lead grew to 14-0 on another 10-play drive (67 yds.) that
was capped by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Westfal to senior wide
receiver Cody Smith
(Irvine, Calif./Orange Lutheran) on 4th down and 8 yards to go with
4:11 left in the second quarter. Following a Sewanee (1-1)
turnover on the next possession, senior placekicker Peter Alston (Norfolk,
Va./Norfolk Academy) gave the Generals a 17-0 lead at the break
when he drilled a 35-yard field goal with 1:48 to play in the
half.
The Tigers found paydirt on their first possession of the third
quarter, stringing together a 9-play drive that covered 60
yards. Senior running back Ben Cleveland (Ft. Worth,
Texas/Trinity Valley School) scored from 8-yards out to make it
17-7 with 10:06 left in the third quarter. The drive was
extended on a 17-yard run from senior running back/punter Zeke
Wilson (Snellville, Ga./George Walton) on a fake punt on 4th and 11
from the Tigers' 39-yardline.
The Generals countered just 3:49 later on a 14-yard touchdown
run from Westfal, and upped their lead to 31-7 with a 16-yard
touchdown pass from Westfal to sophomore tight end Alex Evans (Ashburn,
Va./Broad Run) with 7:17 left in the fourth quarter. The
Tigers added a late score with 47 seconds remaining as sophomore
quarterback Lee Schurlknight (Darlington, S.C./The Byrnes School)
scored on a 1-yard run for the 31-14 final margin.
As a team, the Generals gained 414 total yards led by Westfal,
who completed 5-of-10 passes for 108 yards and two
touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for a team-best 83 yards
and one score. Junior running back Brett Murray (Lookout
Mountain, Tenn./Baylor) chipped in 51 yards on 13 carries, while
Vandalov totaled 31 yards and one touchdown on five carries.
Evans snared three passes for 52 yards and one touchdown.
On defense, W&L limited the Tigers to just 256 yards.
Junior defensive back Jake Pelton
(Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) posted a team-high 11 tackles (9
solo) and recovered a fumble, while junior linebacker Stephen Peck (Grosse Pointe,
Mich./Cranbrook-Kingwood) notched seven tackles and one sack.
Cleveland rushed for a team-high 73 yards and one touchdown on
nine carries to lead the way for the Tigers. Senior defensive
back Alfonza Knight (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) paced the
defense with 11 stops.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels
to Centre College for a 7:30 pm contest.
