ALLENTOWN, Pa. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team split a pair of Centennial Conference matches on Saturday morning at the Muhlenberg duals. The Generals knocked off the home-standing Mules, 24-21, for their first conference win of the season, before falling to Ursinus, 43-6.
In the win over Muhlenberg, only five weight classes were contested, with no match at 125 pounds and each team picking up a pair of forfeit wins. Junior Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) gave the Generals a 6-3 lead after he pinned sophomore Matt Parker in 6:25. W&L dropped the next two matches by decision to fall behind 9-6, but first-year Daniel Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles School) posted a pin of junior Patrick Gibson at 165 pounds to give the Generals a 12-9 lead entering the final four matches, which included two forfeit wins by each team. It was W&L's first conference victory since a 22-21 win over Gettysburg during the 2008-09 season.
In the loss to Ursinus, the Generals fell behind 12-0 following forfeit losses in the 125 and 133 weight classes. Campbell got W&L on the board with a 3-2 decision over first-year Elisha Gaylor, but the Generals fell in the next three bouts to fall behind 25-3 entering the 174-pound weight class. There, Igel picked up W&L's final win, a 7-3 decision over sophomore William Reick to make the score 25-6. Forfeit losses at 184, 197 and 285 produced the final margin.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Newport News, Va., for a 1:00 pm dual match with the Apprentice School.
