Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Hollins University recovered from an
11-point first-half deficit to post a 63-56 win over Washington and
Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the
Warner Center.
The Generals (2-4, 1-2) assumed a 26-15 lead with 6:40 left in
the first half on a layup by junior forward Katy Wilson (Chattanooga,
Tenn./Baylor) and held the same 11-point advantage (28-17)
following a jumper by senior forward Becca Bolton (Pittsboro,
N.C./Chatham Central) at the 5:54 mark. However, an 11-0 run
by Hollins (4-4, 3-1), keyed by five points from junior guard Lacie
Forrest (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook) and four points by junior guard
Jasmine Greene (Hampton, Va./Tabb), knotted the score at 28-28 with
2:58 left before the break.
A three-pointer by W&L senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro,
N.C./Ragsdale) gave the Generals the lead right back en route to
holding a 32-30 advantage at the half.
Another Ingram triple extended the W&L lead to 35-30 at the
start of the second stanza, but a 6-0 run featuring a pair of
buckets by Greene, gave Hollins its first lead of the game (36-35)
with 17:29 to play. The Generals took the lead back (39-37)
on a jumper by senior guard Allison Sublett (Grand
Rapids, Mich./West Catholic) with 15:54 left and did not trail
again until Hollins took the lead for good at 47-44 on a
three-point play by sophomore forward Chanci Wright (Eden,
Texas/Eden) with 11:28 left to play.
The Hollins lead swelled to as many as seven points at 55-48
with 6:04 remaining, but the Generals climbed to within two points
(55-53) on a three-point play by Bolton with 4:31 left in the
contest. However, that would be as close as the Generals
would get as W&L made good on just 2-of-7 field goal attempts
and missed all three of its free throws the rest of the way.
Bolton led the Generals with her fourth double-double of the
season, recording 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ingram notched
13 points, while Wilson tallied 10 points and a game-high 12
rebounds.
Hollins, which posted its first win over W&L since the
2003-04 season, was led by Forrest's 19 points. First-year
forward Lauren Morris (Morehead, N.C./Croatan) notched 17 points on
7-of-12 shooting, and Greene tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds, six
assists and four steals.
Washington and Lee will now break for finals before returning to
the court on December 19 when it travels to Christopher Newport for
a 5:30 pm contest.
