Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Senior guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro,
N.C./Ragsdale) sank two shots from the line with nine seconds to
play to give the Washington and Lee women's basketball team a 51-50
victory over Christopher Newport on Monday night at the Freeman
Center.
After CNU (5-3) took a 48-42 lead on a Nicole Mitchell (Falls
Church, Va./George Mason) jumper with 4:01 to play, W&L (3-4)
outscored the Captains 9-2 down the stretch, including making good
on 5-of-6 free throws, to eke out the one-point win.
After trailing for all of the first half, a jumper by senior
forward Becca Bolton
(Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) gave the Generals their first
lead (28-27) with 15:41 left in regulation. Seven lead changes and
four ties highlighted the second half, including an 11-4 Generals
run allowing W&L to pull ahead by six points (37-31) at
10:29.
However, a 9-2 scoring run by CNU put the Captains back up a
single point, 40-39, on a free throw from first-year Camry Green
(Richmond, Va./Richmond Community) with 7:42 to play. A triple from
Ingram put W&L back up a pair (42-40) at the 6:59 mark before
the Captains scored eight-straight points to assume the
aforementioned 48-42 lead and set up the game's final minutes.
A jumper by Mitchell began the game (2-0) and launched the
Captains on a 20-8 game-opening scoring run. Junior guard Katy Wilson (Chattanooga,
Tenn./Baylor) started a nine-point unanswered streak for the
Generals at the 9:19 mark (22-13), cutting the CNU lead to four
(22-18). Bolton finished off the first half for W&L with two
made free throws going into halftime with a 26-22 Captain
advantage.
Bolton posted her fifth double-double this season with a
team-high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Two other Generals recorded
double-digit points as Wilson netted 13 points and Ingram
registered 14 points. W&L also outrebounded the Captains 39-29,
including 14-10 on the offensive end.
CNU was led by Green, who scored 14 points off the bench and
Mitchell, who netted 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Sophomore Tia
Perry added eight points and eight boards
The Generals will take a break for the holidays and next see
action on December 30 as they travel to Ferrum, Virginia to face
the Ferrum Panthers. Tip-off is set for 4:00pm.
