LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee opened its 2011-12 wrestling season on Saturday with five wrestlers competing in the VMI Open.
First-year Conor Duffey (Boxford, Mass./Brooks School) produced the Generals' top performance on the day by finishing as the runner-up in the 149-pound weight class. Duffey began his day by knocking off Scotty Hardiman of Campbell by a score of 7-4. He then defeated Thomas LeBarre of Campbell, 8-3, before falling to Kyle Spruill of the Apprentice School in the finals by a score of 4-2.
Sophomore Dan Igel (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Bolles School) finished third in the 157-pound weight class by going 3-1 overall. He opened with a 9-5 win over VMI's Jacob Barton, before Jeremy Atkinson of Southern Virginia produced a pin in 1:16. Igel recovered to down Kyle Lowry of the Apprentice School by a score of 3-2 and then defeated Barton again, 7-5, in the third-place match.
First-year Marino Orlandi (Stanton, N.J./Blair Academy) also notched a win on the day. He fell to Jonathan Jones of VMI, 9-2, to open in the 165-pound weight class, then recovered to defeat Hardy Hendren of VMI, 8-4. His day ended with a fall in 4:13 to Dan Grimes of VMI.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday when they participate in the University of Scranton Invitational beginning at 10:00 am.
