W&L Wrestling Finishes Fifth at W&L Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fifth out of seven teams as it hosted the W&L Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.  Senior 157-pounder Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

Washington & Jefferson won the tournament with 79.5 points and was followed by the Apprentice School in second with 75.5 points.  NYU (59), West Virginia Tech (52), W&L (43.5), Scranton (33.5) and Southern Virginia (10) rounded out the team placings.

Jaworski earned his MOP award after winning the championship of the 157-pound weight class. First-year 141-pounder Eric Fessel (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) also won his weight bracket, while junior David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) produced a third-place finish for W&L in the 165-pound bracket.

Jaworski began with a bye, then defeated NYU sophomore Dan Gorman, 7-3, to advance to the finals.  In the championship match, he posted a 9-7 decision over sophomore Kyle Spruill of the Apprentice School to finish with a 2-0 record.

Fessel opened his tournament with an 8-5 decision over NYU senior Clement Bommier, then knocked off Apprentice sophomore Otis Wesby with a pin in 4:02.  He then defeated junior Chris Leva of Washington & Jefferson by injury default in the finals to finish 3-0 overall.

Dennis defeated Scranton senior Steve Glickman in his opening match, pinning him in 6:09.  He then dropped a 3-2 decision to W&J first-year David Dibenedetto, before posting a win over West Virginia Tech first-year Josh Vance by fall (1:14).  Dennis completed his day with a pin of Apprentice School junior Anthony Damico (4:04) to finish with a 3-1 overall mark.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it participates in the McDaniel Quad against McDaniel, Stevens and the Merchant Marines.  Action begins at 11:00 am.
