Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team
fell, 3-0, to No. 8 Christopher Newport on Sunday afternoon at the
W&L Turf Field.
The eighth-ranked Captains (8-1) limited the Generals (3-3) to
just two shots on the day and scored a pair of first half goals in
earning the win.
Sophomore midfielder Caitlin Cahill (Virginia Beach,
Va./Bayside) opened the scoring just 2:22 into the contest when she
took a pass from sophomore forward Chrissy Kurecki (Richmond,
Va./L.C. Bird) and beat W&L sophomore goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore,
Md./Loch Raven).
CNU extended its lead to 2-0 when senior defender Katelyn Yandle
(Portsmouth, Va./Nansemond River) scored off a penalty corner with
1:41 remaining in the opening period. Senior midfielder Kylie Cale
(Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) picked up the assist.
The score remained 2-0 until the 68:51 mark when senior forward
Taylor Harrell (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) tallied an unassisted goal
to account for the final 3-0 margin.
Kyne started in goal for the Generals and played 64:56 before
leaving with an injury. She was credited with five saves. Sophomore
Caroline
Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) played the final
5:04.
Junior Brittany Bradsher (Hampton, Va./Bethel) played all 70:00
in goal for the Captains and came up with one save.
The Generals next play on Friday when they host Sweet Briar at
7:00 pm at the W&L Turf Field.
