Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team
fell, 5-0, to No. 20 Johns Hopkins University on Sunday
afternoon.
The 20th-ranked Blue Jays (2-4) scored three
first-half goals and outshot the Generals (2-2) 34-15 in cruising
to the five-goal victory.
Annie Shepard started the scoring for JHU when she scored an
unassisted goal at the 18:16 mark. The Blue Jays quickly added to
their lead when Meghan Kellett scored off a feed from Amy Wharton
59 seconds later.
Sam Stuek added an unassisted goal at the 26:51 mark to give the
Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage at the break.
Johns Hopkins quickly added to their lead in the second half
when Ariana Branchini tallied an unassisted marker just 1:54 into
the second period and Carly Biano capped the scoring at the 39:39
mark with an unassisted goal of her own.
In addition to the 34-15 advantage in shots, the Blue Jays
earned nine penalty corners to just five for the Generals.
Sophomores Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor)
and Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) each saw time for
W&L. Sutherland made six saves and allowed four goals in 27:22
of action, while Kyne played the final 42:38 in the cage, allowing
one goal and coming up with 13 stops. Junior defender Lizz Dye
(Houston, Texas/Episcopal) added a defensive save for W&L.
Kim Stein played all 70:00 in goal for JHU and recorded nine
saves.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when they host Virginia
Wesleyan at 2:00 pm.
