Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 24 Washington and Lee women's
soccer team dropped its season opener to Sewanee, 1-0, on Saturday
afternoon at Watt Field in the first game of the Washington and Lee
Invitational.
Both teams saw limited chances in the opening minutes of the
first half, but Sewanee (2-1) used a corner kick in the
40th minute to tally the only goal of the match. Junior
defender Lilly Barnett (Abilene, Texas) recorded the goal of an
assist from sophomore midfielder Bess Goodman (Greensboro,
N.C.).
W&L (0-1) held the advantage in both shots, 9-8, and corner
kicks, 5-3, for the contest.
Junior goalie Emily
Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all 90:00 in net for the
Generals, recording three saves. Sewanee sophomore netminder Britt
Williams (Birmingham, Ala.) also played the duration, recording
three saves.
The Generals return to action tomorrow as they face Methodist
University in the final game of the W&L Invitational. Game time
is slated for 2:30 pm at Watt Field.
