LEXINGTON, Va. -- The sixth-seeded Washington
and Lee men's basketball team had four players score in
double figures and the Generals knocked off 11th-seeded Emory &
Henry, 92-60, in first round action of the ODAC Tournament on
Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (17-9) used a 33-7 run over the
final 13:24 of the first half to assume a 43-23 lead at the break
and to cruise to their 17th win of the season. The 17
wins mark the highest single-season win total since W&L won 20
contests (20-7) over the course of the 1988-89 season.
The Generals forced 10 E&H turnovers
during the decisive run and limited the Wasps to 3-of-12 shooting
during that span.
The Generals shot 45.3 percent (26-64) from
the field in posting a season-high for points scored and they also
outrebounded E&H, 46-25, including 20-6 on the offensive glass.
Senior forward Andrew Payne (Charleston, W.
Va./George Washington) led W&L with a career-high 21 points on
5-of-7 shooting from the floor and 9-of-12 shooting from the line.
Sophomore guard Jon Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood-Oxford)
matched his career-high with 12 points, senior forward Ben Goetsch
(Timonium, Md./Gilman) chipped in 11 points and junior guard Jason
Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) added 10 markers, all in the
first half. First-year forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte,
N.C./Myer's Park) grabbed a career-high 11 boards and chipped
in eight points.
Junior forward Terrance Grigg (Charlotte,
N.C./Hopewell) led the Wasps with 20 points, while sophomore guard
Michael Owens (Quinton, Va./New Kent) registered 10 markers. Junior
forward Josh Cunningham (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) chipped in eight
points and five boards.
With the win, the Generals advance to the
quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament, where they take on
third-seeded and 11th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan (21-4) in
a rematch of last year's title contest. The Generals and
Marlins will tip-off on Friday at 8:00 pm at the Salem Civic Center
in Salem, Va.
