HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team
finished in sixth place out of eight teams at the Centennial
Conference Wrestling Championships hosted by Stevens Institute of
Technology on Saturday.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy claimed the team championship
with 88 points, while Ursinus finished second with 78 points.
Stevens was third with 70.5 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (52),
McDaniel (48), W&L (18.5), Muhlenberg (17.5), Gettysburg (9.5).
Individually, the Generals were led by sophomore David Dennis
(Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood), who finished as the runner-up in the
157-pound weight class. He opened with a victory over
Gettysburg's Joe Fiore by fall (2:04), then pinned Michael
Testa of Johns Hopkins in 28 seconds. USMMA's Dan Twito then
defeated Dennis, 5-3, in the championship match.
Sophomore Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) also
placed for W&L, finishing in fourth place in the 125-pound
weight class. Ersing posted a 16-0 win over Stevens' Brad
Warren, but fell to McDaniel's Earl Eppard by a score of 8-1
in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Ersing defeated
Connor Gregory of Ursinus, 15-13, but his day ended with a 9-5 loss
to Johns Hopkins' Adam Stevens, 9-5.
