BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
men's basketball team withstood a late Bridgewater rally as
the Generals pulled out a 75-71 victory over the Eagles at Nininger
Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Holding a four-point advantage at the break
(35-31), W&L opened the second half on a 16-7 run to assume a
51-38 lead at the 11:47 mark following a dunk from first-year
forward J.D. Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park). The Generals (15-7,
7-6) still held a 13-point advantage (63-50) with 4:14 to play
before BC (9-12, 6-8) went on a 14-3 run over the next 2:31 to pull
within three points at 67-64 with 1:43 remaining. Bridgewater
senior guard Dominic Trawick and senior forward Jake Johnson scored
12 of BC's 14 points during the run.
However, the Generals composed themselves and
responded by connecting on 8-10 free throws down the stretch to
secure the win and earn a split of the regular-season series with
the Eagles. For the game, W&L attempted 39 (26-39) free throws
to just 15 (5-15) for the Eagles.
Senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium,
Md./Gilman) led W&L with 18 points, while adding six rebounds.
Ey finished with career-highs in points (14) and rebounds (9),
while first-year guard Jeremy Adkins (Huntington, W. Va./Spring
Valley) chipped in 14 points and junior guard Jason Cimino
(Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) totaled five points, six assists and
four steals.
Trawick, the ODAC's leading scorer
entering the contest at 21.9 points per game, posted a game-high 25
points, but shot just 10-27 from the field, including 3-12 from
beyond the arc. He also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and had
five assists. Johnson added 17 points and five rebounds and junior
guard Kyle Hammond registered 12 points.
The Generals return to action on Monday when
they host No. 1 Guilford at &:00 pm in the Warner Center.
