Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore running backs Luke Heinsohn
(Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) and Brett Murray (Lookout
Mountain, Tenn./Baylor) both rushed for over 100 yards as
Washington and Lee rolled up 425 rushing yards in posting a 45-24
victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC football action on Saturday
afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Generals (3-2, 2-0) trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter
when Murray jump-started the W&L rushing effort with a 52-yard
touchdown run at the 12:41 mark for a 10-7 lead. W&L
added to the lead 6:37 later when junior quarterback Charlie
Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) capped a 12-play, 86-yard
drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to first-year tight end Alex
Evans (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) for a 17-7 advantage.
Sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton
(Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) intercepted Emory & Henry
(4-2, 0-2) junior quarterback Dustin Beck (Connellys Springs,
N.C./East Burke) in the end zone on the ensuing drive and the
Generals proceeded to march 80 yards on 11 plays to assume a 24-7
halftime lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Westfal with just 19
seconds remaining in the half.
Washington and Lee upped its lead to 31-7 just 2:17 into the
third quarter when Westfal found Murray for a 17-yard touchdown
pass. The Wasps responded with 10-straight third quarter
points to make it a 31-17 game with just under five minutes
remaining in the penultimate quarter, but the Generals scored two
more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one by Heinsohn (1
yard) and another by Murray (6 yards) to secure the homecoming
victory.
W&L amassed 491 yards of total offense and rushed for more
than 400 yards for the third time this season. Heinsohn
finished with 130 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries, while
Murray totaled 121 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. He
also caught two passes for 22 yards in producing 225 all-purpose
yards and three touchdowns. Junior running back Harrison
Hudson (Salem, Va./Salem) registered 95 yards on 11 carries and
Westfal rushed eight times for 65 yards and one touchdown. He
also completed 6-of-9 passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.
Sophomore linebacker Doug Fraser (Richmond,
Va./Douglas Freeman) paced the defense with 10 tackles.
Pelton added eight stops, two pass breakups and one
interception.
Beck led the Wasps by completing 25-of-37 passes for 255 yards,
but was intercepted twice. Senior running back Caleb Jennings
(Cedar Bluff, Va./Richlands) rushed nine times for 69 yards and one
touchdown, but was injured late in the first half and played
sparingly in the second half. Junior wide receiver Preston
Jennings (Banner Elk, N.C./Avery County) caught six passes for 77
yards and junior defensive end Daniel Preston (Kingsport,
Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) totaled a game-high 14 tackles to lead the
E&H defense.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts
24th-ranked Randolph-Macon for a 1:00 pm contest.
