Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury,
Conn./Ethel Walker) recorded her first-career hat trick as the
Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated Eastern Mennonite,
4-0, on Tuesday night at the W&L Turf Field.
Tran upped her season-goal total to a career-high 10 as
W&L (7-4, 4-1 ODAC) bested EMU (7-6, 3-2) for the
fourth-consecutive time in Lexington.
Senior midfielder Emmy
Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) fed a pinpoint pass to Tran
in front of EMU senior Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian
Springs) that she deposited past the Royals' keeper just 2:00 into
the contest to put W&L up 1-0.
Junior midfielder
Annie Stevenson
(Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country) then took a pass from sophomore
midfielder
Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and
beat Nolt to push the Generals' advantage to 2-0 at the 13:28
mark.
W&L's lead swelled to 3-0 at the 27:27 mark of the opening
stanza when Tran notched her second goal following a feed from
senior defender Jennie
Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal).
In the second half, Tran finished off her hat trick with an
unassisted goal in the 38th minute to cap the scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Caroline Sutherland
(Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) came up with five saves and Norcini
added a defensive save for the Generals as W&L posted its
second shutout win of the season.
Nolt made eight saves for the Royals as W&L outshot EMU,
18-12, including 13-1 in the opening period.
Washington and Lee returns to action when it takes on Rhodes at
2:00 pm on Saturday. That game will be played on a neutral field at
Sewanee.
