LEXINGTON, Va. -- Eastern Mennonite junior
forward D.J. Hinson (Newport News, Va./Menchville) erupted for 34
points and the 24th-ranked Royals built a 19-point
halftime lead in defeating Washington and Lee, 83-48, in
men's basketball action at the Warner Center on Wednesday
evening.
Hinson connected on 12-15 shots from the
field, including 7-9 from beyond the arc, and added five rebounds
as EMU improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-0 in the ODAC. The loss
snapped a modest four-game winning streak for W&L and put the
Generals at 8-3, 1-2 on the season.
The Royals held a 25-19 lead at the 8:50 mark
of the first half before outscoring the Generals 19-6 the remainder
of the first period to take a 44-25 lead at the break. EMU's
scoring run continued into the second half as it outscored W&L
31-10 over the first 12:26 of the second half to take a 75-35 lead
with 7:34 to play.
The Generals shot just 32.7 percent (17-52)
from the floor and turned the ball over 23 times, while EMU shot
54.5 percent (30-55) from the field and outrebounded W&L 37-32.
Senior forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park
School) led W&L with nine points and added three rebounds.
Senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) added seven point
and four rebounds.
Junior guard Todd Phillips (Waynesboro,
Va./Waynesboro) added 15 points and three steals for Eastern
Mennonite and senior guard Austin Twine (Dublin, Va./Pulaski
County) chipped in eight points and five boards.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when
they host No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan at 2:00 pm.
