LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee
wrestling team was in action on Saturday afternoon as it hosted the
W&L Invitational at the Warner Center, finishing fifth out of
the eight teams in the tournament.
Waynesburg College took the team title with 97
points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (81.0), Johns
Hopkins (65.5), Scranton (40.0), Washington and Lee (33.0),
Muhlenberg (31.5), West Virginia Tech (12.0) and Southern Virginia
(0.0).
Junior 141-pounder Nick Garber (Waynesburg,
Pa./Waynesburg Central) of Waynesburg was named the tournament's
most outstanding wrestler.
Individually, W&L had three wrestlers
place in the top three spots, led by sophomores Sam Campbell
(Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and David Dennis (Sherman,
W.Va./Ravenswood), who finished as the runner-up in their
respective weight classes.
Campbell advanced to the championship match of
the 141-pound bracket by defeating first-year teammate Brian Ross
(Brick, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy), 19-3, and first-year Matt
Nelson (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna-Lincoln) of Johns Hopkins,
8-5. Garber then defeated Campbell by fall
(1:11) in the finals.
Dennis advanced to the finals of the 157-pound
bracket by defeating Waynesburg sophomore Jon Sanko (Butler,
Pa./Butler) in the first round, 3-1, and Scranton senior Mike
Guenther (Pittstown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) in the
semifinals by a score of 4-1. He then suffered a
10-1 loss to W&J sophomore Dom Demor (Georgetown, Pa./South
Side Beaver) in the finals.
Sophomore 125-pounder Ben Ersing (Beverly,
Mass./St. John's Prep) finished third after defeating
Scranton first-year Mike Murcia (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney) in
the consolation final, 8-5. Ersing dropped a
semifinal match to first-year Alex Crown (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle)
of Waynesburg by a score of 21-4, but recovered to knock off Johns
Hopkins sophomore Adam Stevens (New York, N.Y./Collegiate) by fall
(5:22) en route to finishing third.
Washington and Lee will return to action on
Sun., Jan. 24 when it travels to Westminster, Md., for the McDaniel
Quad beginning at 11:00 am.
