Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and
Lee recovered from a 16-point second-half deficit to record a 63-59
overtime victory over Lynchburg College in ODAC men's
basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (9-4, 2-3) committed 16 turnovers in the first half
and trailed 27-22 at the break. The Hornets (6-8, 2-4) opened the
second stanza with a 13-2 run to assume a 40-24 lead with 16:44
remaining. However a quick 10-0 W&L burst, including
back-to-back three-pointers by senior Andrew Payne (Charleston,
W.Va./George Washington) and first-year guard Jeremy Adkins
(Huntington, W.Va./Spring Valley), cut the LC lead to six points
(40-34) with 13:23 left in regulation.
W&L chipped away at the Hornets' advantage and took a
44-43 lead at the 8:50 mark on a jumper by first-year forward J.D.
Ey (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), but LC grabbed the lead back on a
layup by senior forward Jeff Langrock (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug)
moments later and stretched the lead to five points (53-48) on a
layup by senior guard Steven Echols (Martinsville, Va./Carlisle)
with 3:34 remaining.
Junior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) pulled the
Generals to within 53-51 when he hit 1-of-2 free throws following a
technical foul on the Lynchburg bench with 1:52 left and senior
forward Zac White (Baltimore, Md./Park School) pulled W&L even
at 53-53 on a jumper with 1:34 remaining. Each team missed a pair
of shots in the final minute and the teams headed to overtime.
In the extra session, W&L shot 4-of-6 from the floor
spearheaded by senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman),
who had eight of the Generals' 10 points in overtime. A
Goetsch layup with 33 seconds left broke a 59-59 tie and Cimino
drilled a pair of free throws with 11.5 seconds left to ice the
game.
W&L committed 29 turnovers and shot just 5-of-14 from the foul
line in the contest. However, the Generals held a 47-36 advantage
on the boards and shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the floor in
posting their eighth-straight win over the Hornets.
Goetsch led W&L with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cimino posted
eight points and five assists, while White notched seven points and
seven rebounds.
Echols paced LC with 18 points, eight rebounds, seven steals and
three assists. Senior forward K.C. Mendez (San Antonio,
Texas/Winston Churchill) chipped in 14 points and five boards.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to
Roanoke College for a 7:00 pm contest.
