Box Score SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
scored five second-half goals in defeating Sweet Briar, 5-2, on
Saturday afternoon.
After neither team managed to score a goal in the first half,
W&L (3-4, 2-1 ODAC) senior Steph Mansey (Mendham,
N.J./Randolph) tallied the game's first marker in the 44th
minute when she scored unassisted to give W&L a 1-0 lead.
The Vixens (0-6, 0-1) responded quickly, tying the game at 1-1
just over eight minutes later on an unassisted goal by sophomore
Ariel Yoder at the 51:55 mark.
However, the Generals would score four goals over the next ten
minutes en route to the 5-2 win. Mansey began the scoring barrage
with another unassisted goal in the 53rd minute. Sophomore
Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) scored off a feed
from junior Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) in the 55th
minute and first-year Katharine Price (Concord,
Mass./Concord-Carlisle) scored unassisted at 58:40.
First-year Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest
Academy) capped the Generals' scoring when she deposited a
pass from sophomore Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte
Country Day) into the back of the cage at 61:41.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St.
Stephen's & St. Agnes) made a pair of saves for the
Generals and W&L held a 12-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when its hosts
Limestone at 6:30 pm.
