LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team raced
out to a 3-0 halftime lead en route to defeating Randolph-Macon,
4-1, on Friday night at the W&L Turf Field.
Senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) put
W&L up 1-0 when she scored following a pass from classmate Alex
Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) just 29 seconds into
the contest.
The Generals (2-4, 1-1 ODAC) quickly made it 2-0 when Caritis
tallied her first goal of the game off a feed from senior Grace
McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. McKellam) at the 1:26 mark.
Caritis scored again with 54 seconds remaining in the first half
following an assist from junior Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn
Mawr) to give W&L a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Randolph-Macon (0-8, 0-2) got on the board in the 37th minute when
senior Caitlin Titsworth (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) made
good on a penalty stroke to put the score at 3-1.
The Generals' last goal came with 15 seconds remaining in
the game when first-year Ann Burton Gerhardt (Williamsburg,
Va./Walsingham Academy) scored unassisted.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's
& St. Agnes) played the entire game in the cage for W&L and
came up with eight saves as the Yellow Jackets held an 11-5
advantage in penalty corners. McGee added a defensive save for
W&L, while Caritis finished with an assist and a pair of
goals.
For RMC, junior Kortney McLaughlin (New Castle, Del./William Penn)
started in goal and played the first half. She allowed three goals
and made three saves. First-year Maggie Liebowitz (Charlottesville,
Va./St. Mary's) played the second half in the cage and
allowed one goal while making four saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it takes on
Sweet Briar at 1:00 pm.
