WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Catholic rallied from a two-goal second-half
deficit to earn a 3-2 win in overtime over the Washington and Lee
field hockey team on Saturday afternoon.
W&L (1-3) opened the scoring in the 14th minute of the first
half, when senior Alex Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy)
took a pass from senior Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) and
put it past CUA's Marian Cassilly.
Mansey then gave the Generals a 2-0 lead at the 42:09 mark when
she scored off a feed from senior Grace McGee (Virginia Beach,
Va/Floyd. E. McKellam).
The Cardinals (4-1) got on the board in the 50th minute when Liz
McCormick put a ball past W&L senior goalkeeper Caroline
Habliston (St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) to make it a 2-1
game. It appeared that W&L would escape with the win until
Catholic scored the equalizer in the 70th minute as Emma Dixon took
a pass from Carley Walko and deposited the ball in the back of the
cage.
Following one scoreless overtime, Walko scored the gamewinner for
Catholic in the second extra session to complete the comeback.
Habliston made 11 saves on the day for W&L, while junior
Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) had two defensive saves and
McGee and junior Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) had one
defensive save apiece.
Cassilly made four saves for Catholic and Emily Sencindiver had
one defensive save.
The Cardinals held an 18-8 advantage in penalty corners, as well
as a 22-12 advantage in shots.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host
Lynchburg at 7:00 pm.
