NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
fell behind No. 17 Christopher Newport 3-0 in the first half en
route to falling by a final score of 4-1 on Friday evening.
CNU (4-2) senior Kim Tomlin gave the Captains a 1-0 lead just 3:58
into the game when she tallied the first of her two scores of the
game. CNU extended its lead to 2-0 when junior Kylie Cale notched
an unassisted goal in the 13th minute, then scored its final goal
of the first half on an unassisted tally by junior Taylor Harnell
in the 19th minute.
Neither team found the cage in the second half until Tomlin
tallied her second goal of the contest with 15:01 remaining in the
game.
W&L (1-2) senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. Johns)
scored the Generals' only goal with just 16 seconds remaining
to account for the final tally of 4-1. With the goal, she is now
two goals away from becoming W&L's all-time leader in
goals scored.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens
& St. Agnes) made 18 saves for W&L and senior Grace McGee
(Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. McKellam) added one defensive save as
CNU outshot the Generals 30-6. Senior Emma Stout made four saves
for CNU. The Captains also held an 11-3 advantage in penalty
corners.
Washington and Lee returns to action when it takes on Catholic on
Saturday at 2:00 pm.
