Lexington, Va. – The Washington
and Lee Field Hockey team opened its 2009 season with a loss to No.
11 Johns Hopkins, 2-0, Friday evening at the W&L Turf
Field.
Johns Hopkins (3-0) recorded the first goal of the game over 13
minutes in off a shot from senior forward Gabi Henn (Lambertville,
N.J./South Hunderton) off an assist from senior forward Andrea
Vandersall (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet). JHU would score just over
five minutes later on an unassisted goal from first-year forward
Meghan Kellett (Audubon, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), for the final
margin.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's
& St. Agnes) started in goal for W&L (0-1) and recorded
seven saves, playing all 70 minutes. Senior forwards Stephanie
Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) and Sallie Armstrong (Houston,
Texas/St. John's School) led the shot totals for W&L at
two apiece.
JHU goalkeeper Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, Calif./Cupertino) logged 70
minutes in the cage and recorded four saves. It was the first time
Tieu recorded a save this season, having not been tested in her two
previous games.
The Generals return to action Saturday when they host McDaniel at
3:30 pm at the Turf Field.
