Peyster's Homerun Propels W&L Baseball to 8-6 Win Over RMC

LYINCHBURG, Va. -- Senior second baseman Byron Peyster's (Washington, D.C./Maret) two-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning broke a 6-6 tie and lifted the sixth-seeded Washington and Lee baseball team to an 8-6 win over third-seeded Randolph-Macon on day three of the ODAC Baseball Championships at Lynchburg City Stadium.

W&L raced out to a 6-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning before the Yellow Jackets tallied four runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 6-6. Neither team managed to push across a run until Peyster drove in junior first baseman Hunter Serenbetz (Stamford, Conn./Taft School) with his first homerun of the season with one out in the ninth. Senior righthander Brendan Clark (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) set the Yellow Jackets down in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.

Peyster finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI and a double in addition to his homerun. Serenbetz was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while junior catcher Will Lewis (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) was 2-for-5 with one run scored.

Clark picked up the win (4-2) as he threw 4.2 innings of shutout ball in relief of sophomore starter Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial). Clark allowed just two hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Kevin Davis led RMC as he was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Jay Licther added three hits and a run scored and Adam Carpenter was 2-for-4 with one run.

Brian Jordan took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

W&L will now play tonight at 7:00 pm against fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney, with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game.
