Generals Fell Marlins, 50-47

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to seize control of the game and record a 50-47 victory over Virginia Wesleyan in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.

The Generals trailed by as many as 11 points (24-13) with 6:47 left in the first half before closing the gap to four points (26-22) at the intermission.

The lead changed hands four times in the opening 9:26 of the first stanza before W&L assumed a 35-34 advantage on a three-pointer by first-year guard Kari Ann Pfannenstein (Littletown, Colo./Heritage) with 11:34 remaining. Pfannenstein's triple spearheaded the Generals decisive and go-ahead 8-0 run.

VWC (13-6, 10-4) could not regain the lead, but pulled to within one point (48-47) with 1:12 remaining on an old-fashioned three-point play by senior guard Jocelyn Spencer (Newport News, Va./Hampton Roads).

The Marlins had the ball with a chance to take the lead in the final 30 seconds of the game, but first-year guard Meghan Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) recorded a key block on the defensive end and then knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to preserve W&L's fifth-straight victory and first over the Marlins in their last eight tries.

W&L (10-8, 9-4) limited VWC to just 29.3 percent (17-58) shooting for the game, including 23.5 percent (8-34) in the second half. The Generals also held a 49-29 advantage on the boards.

Ingram led the Blue and White with a game-high 13 points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Senior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) posted 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals, while sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) registered 10 points and seven boards. Senior forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) tied a season-high with 11 rebounds.

The Marlins were paced by Spencer's 12 points and 10 points from senior guard Bryttani Payton (Stafford, Va./North Stafford).

The Generals return to the hardwood on Friday when they travel to Lynchburg for a 7:00 pm contest.
