SALEM, Va. -- Fourth-seeded Bridgewater College limited fifth-seeded Washington and Lee to just 33.9 percent (20-59) shooting from the floor and forced 26 turnovers in defeating the Generals, 77-65, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament held on Thursday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center.
The Eagles (16-10) used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to build a 10-point advantage (18-8) with 11:13 to play. The Generals closed to within 36-32 with 13 seconds left in the half and the Eagles carried a 38-32 lead into the break.
The Generals remained within striking distance early in the second stanza, trailing just 46-40 with 14:50 remaining. However, Bridgewater used a 19-7 run over the next 6:49 to take a commanding 18-point (65-47) lead with 8:01 left in the contest. W&L would close the gap to seven points (68-61) with 3:48 left, but could get no closer as Bridgewater claimed its third win over W&L this season.
First-year forward Rebecca Bolton (Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) led W&L with 21 points and nine rebounds, while first-year guard Meghan Ingram (Greensboro, N.C./Ragsdale) tallied 15 points and five boards. Senior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) notched 14 points and seven steals and sophomore center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.
Jennifer Saunders paced Bridgewater with 16 points. Jordan Burkholder registered 14 points and five assists, while Kristin Bosserman and Jenny Logan totaled 13 points each.
With the loss, Washington and Lee ends its 2008-09 season with a 14-12 overall record.
